It is a matter of great pride to bring out the supplementary issue of Indian Journal of Nuclear Medicine (IJNM) highlighting the scientific contributions being presented at the 49th Annual Conference of Society of Nuclear Medicine, India (SNMI) at INMAS, New Delhi from December 14-17, 2017.
New Delhi, the capital city of India, sprawled over the west bank of the river Yamuna, was designed by British architects, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. The new capital was inaugurated on 13 February 1931 by Lord Irwin, the Viceroy and Governor-General of India at that time. The rise and fall of many empires have left behind a plethora of monuments depicting the grandeur and glory of bygone ages of Delhi. Few amongst the various monuments and places of interest in Delhi are The Red Fort, India Gate, Humayun Tomb, Jama Majid, Jantar Mantar, Quatb Minar, Rashtrapati Bhavan etc.
This is for the sixth time that New Delhi is hosting the Annual Conference of the SNMI, first being in 1970. The Silver Jubilee conference as well as the first ever AOCNMB in India were also held at New Delhi. The current conference is being organized by a dedicated team from Institute of Nuclear medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), Delhi. INMAS, conceptualized by Brig. SK Majumdar - known as the father of Nuclear Medicine in India, has the distinction of starting first structured course in Nuclear Medicine world over. The first publication of IJNM also started from INMAS under the great leadership and guidance of Gen. Lakshmipathi. This conference would also provide a suitable platform for interactive discussions and ideas exchange regarding the latest developments taking place in the field of Nuclear across the globe. The conference will not only provide an opportunity to nuclear medicine physicians from whole of the country to showcase their work but also get invaluable inputs by eminent foreign and national experts. IJNM has the unique distinction in bringing out the supplementary issues coinciding with the time of annual conference to give an idea regarding the latest development and trends in the subject. The aim of publishing the abstracts of presentations in print media is to have a widenet of readership.
There would be about 154 oral and poster presentations in the present conference covering areas related to clinical as well as basic nuclear medicine. The oral and poster presentations have undergone a strict scrutiny and peer-review before being accepted for presentation. The scientific sessions have been carefully designed so that every physician/scientist gets a chance to present their work and listen to the experts' views. The scientific committee of this conference has tried to design a very rich program with theme of the conference being “Atomic Panorama Canvassing the Power of Nuclear medicine and Molecular imaging”. The conference venue, Manekshaw centre, itself is a place of attraction.
The society will also bestow honors on its distinguished speakers with oration awards. This year, the recipients of the Homi Bhabha Memorial Oration, Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Oration and Brig SK Majumdar Memorial Oration awards will be Dr. Sharmila Bannerjee from Mumbai, Dr. Sobhan Vinjamuri from England and Dr. Shoukat H Khan from Srinagar respectively. These awards are named after three great Indian scientists/physicians who have contributed a lot in the field of Nuclear Medicine in India. In addition, there will be Dr N Ramdas prize in Nuclear Thyroidology and Dr. Shakuntla Krishnamurthy prizes in the field of Nuclear Hepatology for best papers.
The whole team of IJNM wishes the organizing team of 49th annual conference of SNMI a great success.
